Charlotte Proudman, born Carlotte Bailye, is a self-professed feminist and British barrister.^[1]^[2] Proudman came to prominence in 2015 when she publicly castigated fellow British barrister Alexander Carter-Silk for a comment he made about her picture on Linkedin.

Education & Employment

Proudman completed her bachelor degree in law at Keele University. While at Keele Proudman racked up £458 in parking fines and was ultimately taken to court.^[3]^[4]

Proudman initially found it difficult to obtain pupillage, which is additional training undertaken by law graduates in England and elsewhere if they wish to become barristers.^[5]^[6]

Soon after obtaining pupilage Proudman undertook an M.Phil in Criminology at Cambridge University. As of August 2022 Proudman has obtained a Ph.D and continues to work as a Barrister in the United Kingdom. Proudman's Ph.D features in her Twitter Handle.

Exchange with Andrew Carter-Silk

Like Proudman, Alexander Carter-Silk is a graduate of Keele University.^[7]^[8]^[9]

After connecting on Linkedin Alexander Carter-Silk privately messaged Proudman and reportedly stated:

"I appreciate that this is probably horrendously politically incorrect but that is a stunning picture!!! You definitely win the prize for the best LinkedIn picture I have ever seen." ^[10] ^[11]

Proudman responded:

"Alex, I find your message offensive. I am on Linked-in [sic] for business purposes, not to be approached about my physical appearance or to be objectified by sexist men." ^[12] ^[13]

Proudman then publicly posted the conversation which proceeded to go viral.

Soon after it was reported that Proudman herself had made similar comments on social media about pictures of both men and women. In contrast Proudman's comments were public.^[14] ^[15]

Separately, Proudman has been quoted as saying:

"The crux of the matter is that men live and work in a brutal society, which is maintained through stratified social order based on ritual humiliation, gentleman's clubs, fights, rites of passage, sexism, and banter."
"When women enter the male realm whether law, politics, or a construction site, they find themselves in a repugnant world in which their only means of survival is by undergoing a fundamental transformation leaving them with little opportunity to make any change." ^[16] ^[17]
