Rungnapha Kanbut is an Australian woman originally from Thailand and is around 60 years of age. In 2019 Kanbut was convicted of keeping two Thai women as slaves in Australia and sentenced to eight years imprisonment. After Kanbut and the two women arrived in Australia in 2004 or 2005 she seized their passports and kept them in debt slavery. Kanbut forced the women to work up to 12 hours per day at various brothels around Sydney.[1][2]
Oddly, at the time of sentencing Judge Nanette Williams said Ms Kanbut was “not without compassion” towards the women she was keeping as slaves.[3][4]
As of August 2022 Kanbut is appealing her sentence.[5][6]
