A man was pranked with dissolving shorts at Queensland beach in March 2023 according to mainstream media. The reports state that the man's girlfriend stole his swimming shorts and then gave him a spare pair that she had purchased. He later discovered that the pair dissolved in water. In the story the man was forced to remain without clothing for several hours and was laughed at by all 15 of her family members present.[1]

Many commentators on Reddit have suggested this story is likely fake, largely due to the claim that no one came to his aid despite several older adults being present.[2]

A similar, confirmed, prank was conducted by American woman Dara Roberts in 2021 and posted online.[3][4]
