Berlinah Madikeledi Wallace
In May 2018 Berlinah Madikeledi Wallace is a South African woman who has resided in the United Kingdom since 1994.[1][2]
Wallace was convicted of attacking her former boyfriend, Mark van Dongen by hurling sulphuric acid over most of his body. Before attacking Mr van Dongen with sulphuric acid, Wallace stated:
"If I can’t have you, no-one can".[3]
As a result of this attack Mr van Dongen was paralyzed below the neck, lost the sight in one eye and had a leg amputated. Wallace was found not guilty of murder or manslaughter but was found guilty on other charges and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 12 years.[4][5]
Mr van Dongen subsequently chose to end his own life via euthanasia in Belgium.[6]
