Domestic violence
The common perception of domestic violence (also known as intimate partner violence) is as something men perpetrate against women. Data suggests this is an inaccurate picture.
Teaching that men should not hit women but that no such prohibition exists for women hitting men violates the social principal of reciprocity and threatens the social fabric. The solution to this is to teach that all violence is unacceptable.
One in five intimate partner homicides in Australia is a woman murdering her male partner.[1]
Reciprocal Violence
One of the key indicators of whether a woman will be a victim of IPV is whether she is a perpetrator of DV/IPV. "Reciprocity was associated with more frequent violence among women"[2]. Women are more likely to be injured as a result of IPV so it follows one key way that women could avoid being a victim of IPV is to not be a perpetrator. To be clear this is not about provocation in the moment. Rather this a long term trend in which a man and a woman initiate IPV against each other. If the woman initiates IPV research clearly shows she's more likely to be a victim of IPV as well.

IPV Decreased Over time
"In the area of demographic risk factors, older age is associated with decreased risk for IPV, with the peak seeming to occur quite early – in late adolescence and young adulthood. This is contrary to earlier views that IPV was related to entrapment in marriage (Stets & Straus, 1989) and inevitably got worse over time (Walker, 1989)."
