Sound bites

The following statements are offered as sound bites on a variety of topics related to men's rights.

Abortion

Globally there were 40 million abortions per year in 1980. Now there are 73 million abortions per year globally (WHO data). Assuming linear growth that comes out to about 2.5 billion abortions since 1980. There is a fairly wide error bar so it's reasonable to say 2-3 billion abortions since 1980.

Gynocentrism

Gynocentrism refers to a dominant or exclusive focus on women in theory or practice. Gynocentrists can be feminist or non-feminist, progressive or conservative.

Identity Politics

Identity politics is a broad movement in which people are categorized on the basis of characteristics that are often readily identifiable. Characteristics often include gender, race, gender identity or sexuality. While identity politics often uses terminology such as diversity it is really talking about a coarse form of diversity based on physical characteristics and ignores important forms of diversity such as diversity of thought.

Intimate Partner Violence

More than 50% of IPV is reciprocal. Of the other 50%, women are perpetrators 70% of the time.

Real Men

All men are real men.

Marriage

Many ancient societies did allow women to divorce their husbands. Many more protected wives from abusive husbands (but rarely the reverse). History has been long and varied.

Men

Men are far more likely to help a woman than harm her. This is true even when the men don't know the woman.

Margaret Atwood Quote

"Men are afraid women will laugh at them... but women are afraid men will kill them."

I always find it a little sad when I see this quote from Margaret Atwood is trotted out.

While it is intended to sound profound the truth is it is largely meaningless. Which men? All men? When? All the time?

The truth is that men, even men you don't know, are far more likely to help you than to ever hurt you.

This is pure hyperbole. Any woman who believed that any given man might actually kill her would avoid men entirely. Women are make this statement often have male partners and friends.

Respect

Respect is a two-way street.
