One man dies every 10 days as a result of Domestic Violence
In Australia, on average, one man dies as a result of DV every 10 days. The AIC document Australian Homicide Report 2010-2011 to 2011-2012: National Homicide Monitoring Program report (hereafter, the report) covers the 2010-2011 & 2011-2012 Australian financial years.[1]
The Australian financial year 2010-2011 (July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011) was a period of 365 days. The Australian financial year 2011-2012 (July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012) was a period of 366 days as 2012 was a leap year. The reporting period for the report covers both of these Australian financial years and so is a total of 731 days.
Table 10 in the report shows that the number of males who have died as a result of domestic violence during the reporting period is 75.
Table 11 shows that 93% of male victims are 15 or older. This is the earliest age at which research data typically classifies a person as potentially being in an intimate relationship.
If we divide the number of days during the reporting period (731) by the number of fatalities (75) and multiply by the proportion of victims 15 or over (0.93) we find that one male on average dies as a result of domestic violence every 10.48 days. This rounds off to one man per 10 days.
