Jezebel

Jezebel is a US-based website featuring news and cultural commentary geared towards women. It was launched in 2007 by Gawker Media under the editorship of Anna Holmes as a feminist publication.

Jezebel is named for a Biblical figure infamous for idolatry. Idolatry is considered to be a mortal sin in Abhrahamic religions such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam. By the early 20th century the term had become associated with loose or fallen women. This is the imagery that the publication wishes to evoke.

After the breakup of Gawker Media, the site was purchased by Univision Communications and later acquired by G/O Media. The site stopped publishing on November 9, 2023, when parent company G/O Media laid off its staff. It was then acquired by Paste on November 29, 2023 which announced plans to relaunch the website.

Jezebel has published misandric material such as the article Hardwired to Disappoint? The Crushingly Low Expectations of Men.

Jezebel has also published articles endorsing violence against men such as Have You Ever Beat Up A Boyfriend? Cause, Uh, We Have. Interestingly this article acknowledges that around 70% of non-reciprocal partner violence involves women being violent to men. As of February 2024 this article has been removed from the Jezebel website.
