On 20 September 2022 Kilner deferred sentencing on defendant Troy Matheson, arguing that Matheson's ex-wife had provoked him by being unfaithful. Kilner called the matter a travesty of justice.[3][4]

Following Matheson's incarceration her ex-wife held a Troy in jail party at his house.[5][6]

Kilner further stated:
