Cyberpunk won't come to pass. Government have a monopoly on force and are jealous of their power. They respond with force when threatened. Long before any company could rival them a threatened state will put down any company that could potentially rival them.

Contiguous territory is needed. A company that obtained contiguous territory would be a quasi-state. Such states have existed in the past and continue to exist. The Dutch East India Company and the Hudson Bay company were quasi-states. In both cases they operated under the nominal supervision of a nation and eventually surrendered anything approaching state-like responsibilities to those nations.

Hezbollah is a quasi-state operating in Southern Lebanon. They will either end up a true state or collapse.

The Knights Templar were not a quasi-state but they rivalled European monarchs for power. They were destroyed for it. They weren't even threatening the European monarchs.
