Melissa Oates
On February 29, 2020 Melissa Oates struck and killed her boyfriend Jari Wise with a car on Wilmot Road, Huonville, Tasmania, Australia. She was reportedly driving at 110km. It is believed he died instantly.[1]
Oates was charged with four breaches of a police family violence order and was bailed to appear on March 17, 2020.[2][3]
As is common in cases in which it is alleged a woman has committed intimate partner violence initial media reports stated that the man and woman were known to each other.[4]
Oates was subsequently convicted of dangerous driving and sentenced to 14 months imprisonment with six months suspended.[5]
Jari's mother Faith Tkalac is now actively raising awareness of domestic and intimate partner violence against all people regardless of gender and has recently proposed Jari's Law.
