Tolerance is the ability or willingness to accept or endure something that differs from, challenges, or is unpleasant to you, without necessarily agreeing with or approving of it.
It has several common meanings:
Social tolerance: Respecting another person's beliefs, behaviour, identity, or lifestyle even when you disagree with it.
Physical tolerance: The ability to endure a substance, condition, or physical stress. For example, someone can develop tolerance to a drug, requiring more of it to produce the same effect.
Technical tolerance: The permitted amount of variation from a specified measurement. For example, a part specified as 10.00 mm with a ±0.05 mm tolerance can range from 9.95 to 10.05 mm.
Psychological tolerance: The capacity to cope with something frustrating, uncomfortable, or distressing without an excessive reaction.
A useful distinction is that tolerance does not necessarily mean approval. You can tolerate something while believing it is wrong, undesirable, or mistaken.
Men tend to be more tolerant of their poltical opponents than women are of their political allies.[1][2]
