Melissa Oates

On February 29, 2020 Melissa Oates struck and killed her boyfriend Jari Wise with a car on Wilmot Road, Huonville, Tasmania, Australia. She was reportedly driving at 110 km/hr and had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit. It is believed he died instantly. Oates just kept on driving.

Oates was charged with four breaches of a police family violence order and was bailed to appear on March 17, 2020.

As is common in cases in which it is alleged a woman has committed intimate partner violence initial media reports stated that the man and woman were known to each other.

Oates was subsequently convicted of dangerous driving and sentenced to 14 months imprisonment with six months suspended.

Jari's mother Faith Tkalac is now actively raising awareness of domestic and intimate partner violence against all people regardless of gender, has recently proposed Jari's Law, and appeared as a speaker during ICMI21.
