The catch phrase A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle has been popular among feminists for decades. The phrase implies that women do not need men. It is often attributed to Gloria Steinem but was in fact coined by Australian feminist Irina Dunn. Dunn was parodying a philospher who had said "A man needs God like a fish needs a bicycle".
