Canberra is the capital city of Australia and the seat of government for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Located in the southern tablelands of New South Wales, Canberra was designed by American architects Walter Burley Griffin and Romano Thorp, with construction beginning in 1913. It was officially opened in 1927 and became the federal capital of Australia in 1938, replacing Melbourne and Sydney as the nation's political heart. With a population of over 500,000 as of 2023, Canberra is known for its planned urban layout, extensive green spaces, and cultural institutions such as the Australian National University and the National Gallery of Australia.

The area now known as Canberra was originally inhabited by the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples for thousands of years. European settlement began in the 19th century, but the city's founding was driven by the need for a neutral capital to replace Melbourne and Sydney. The selection of the site was influenced by its central location between the two eastern states and its scenic beauty. The city's design incorporated a lakeside setting, with the Molonglo River forming a natural boundary.

Situated in a temperate climate zone, Canberra experiences four distinct seasons, with average temperatures ranging from 7°C in winter to 22°C in summer. The city is surrounded by the Brindabella and Black Mountain Ranges, and its landscape includes forests, lakes, and grasslands. Canberra is also home to the Australian National Botanic Gardens and the Cotter River catchment, which provides water to the city.

As the seat of the Australian government, Canberra hosts key institutions such as Parliament House, the High Court of Australia, and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The territory is governed by the ACT Government, with a Chief Minister and a unicameral legislature. The city's political significance is underscored by its role in national policymaking and international diplomacy.

Canberra is home to a diverse population, with a strong emphasis on community engagement and cultural events. The city hosts annual festivals such as the Canberra Writers' Festival and the Floriade, which celebrates spring with a floral display. Educational institutions, including the Australian National University and the University of Canberra, contribute to the city's intellectual and cultural vibrancy.

In recent years, Canberra has been the focus of high-profile legal cases that highlight the complexities of the justice system. For example, in 2025, a man was found guilty of choking and assaulting his partner, with the victim withdrawing their statement during the trial 1. This case sparked discussions about domestic violence and the challenges of prosecuting such crimes. Similarly, in 2026, a report revealed allegations of "egregious conduct" by ACT police and prosecutors in a botched prosecution, raising concerns about the integrity of the legal process in the territory 2. These cases underscore the ongoing need for reform and transparency in Canberra's legal and law enforcement systems.

The economy of Canberra is driven by government employment, education, and research sectors. Major employers include the Australian Public Service, the Australian National University, and the Defence Force. The city is well-connected by road, rail, and air, with the Canberra International Airport serving as a key transport hub. Recent infrastructure projects, such as the upgrade of the Canberra Metro, aim to improve public transportation and reduce congestion.
